The painting process and materials

It is very important to me that buyers of my paintings are entirely happy with the work and materials. For my text paintings, I use the best quality acrylic paints and mediums available (in my opinion, Golden Artist Colors and products fit the bill) and they are always painted on professional or museum quality canvases. For commissioned work, I may use a custom made cotton canvas, (typically 7oz Fredrix/Tara) stretched over museum quality stretcher bars. All works are finished with two or three coats of acrylic glaze or varnish, signed on the back and strung ready to hang with nylon chord. I like to tape the back of each frame, including the metal fixings, to give a clean finish to the work and protect your walls.

My drag paintings are more varied in the materials used (i.e. a range of acrylic gels, mediums, paint and pigments, and sometimes shellac). As the technique I have developed relies heavily on the nature of the support for its final appearance, I do not restrict my self to canvas. Some may not be glazed or varnished as this would eliminate the variety of reflective surface qualities that develop through a mix of media.

How to purchase a painting

Some of the paintings featured on this site are available for sale through galleries exhibiting my work. If this is not indicated on the web page, the work may be for sale by contacting me directly. If you are interested in buying a work directly from me, I will send you a larger, high resolution photograph of the work and any further information relevant to your purchase. Should you wish to proceed, I will require payment in full before you receive the work.

Packaging and shipping

Packaging and carriage costs within New Zealand will be met by me. If you are not entirely happy with the work, you may return it to me within two weeks from my dispatch date, in its original packaging and at your expense. Provided there is no damage to the work, I will refund your payment in full.

The cost of overseas packaging and shipping will be in addition to the purchase price. I can obtain a quote for you on request.

Prices

My prices typically range from NZ$1,600 to NZ$1,800 for a smaller painting, up to $5,000 or more  for larger works.

The price variations take many factors into account, such as the size of the work, cost of materials, time involved in the development and practice of the technique etc.

My photographic prints are priced at $700 for a 400mm square loose print (each work is a limited edition of 5). Framed works measuring 700mm by 750mm are available at $900.

Commissions

I am happy to work to commission. A text painting can be a very personal piece of work, where the buyer chooses a piece of text (a few words, quote, part of a poem etc. and those words then yield their own special pattern in paint. They are never readable, but always unique.
